The Subaru Impreza is a compact car standard-bearer, beloved for its spritely engines and always-reliable all-wheel drive. The Subaru Crosstrek is a relative newcomer that has taken over the crossover market, a rugged performer with great looks and ground clearance.

And in all but a few places, they’re the same car.

Ever-popular crossovers are usually based on sedan platforms, combining the fuel efficiency and driving mechanics of a smaller vehicle with the higher vantage point, looks, and off-road or towing capabilities of an SUV. The 2019 Subaru Crosstrek and 2019 Subaru Impreza Hatchback are built on the same Subaru Global Platform with the same 152-horsepower 2.0-liter SUBARU BOXERĀ® 4-cylinder engine. Both offer Subaru’s legendary standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, and they have the exact same cargo area and leg room dimensions. Both were named an IIHS Top Safety Pick+, and both offer similar features like heated seats and available moonroof.

2019 Subaru Crosstrek vs. 2019 Subaru Impreza Hatchback

There are, however, key differences.

The Crosstrek, as a crossover, weighs more. That’s thanks in part to its suspension, which gives the vehicle an impressive 8.7 inches of ground clearance–among the best in the crossover class. That added bulk means the 2019 Subaru Impreza gets slightly better gas mileage, up to 36 mpg on the highway compared to the Crosstrek’s still-great 33 mpg.

There’s a marginal price difference between the two, as the Crosstrek costs less than $1,000 more than the Impreza, and the Impreza comes equipped standard with a LineartronicĀ® CVT(Continuously Variable Transmission) while that’s an upgrade (from a manual) on the Crosstrek. The Impreza still, however, offers a manual version for those who like to shift for themselves.
