How to Fill Tires With Air

Filling a tire with air

Keeping up with your car tire pressure may not seem like the most important service task, but under-inflated or over-inflated tires can lead to poor fuel economy, less traction control, shorter tire lifespan, and other things that can cause you to not be able to drive as efficiently around Minneapolis. How much air should you put in your tires to make sure that they’re properly inflated? Learn about how to fill tires with air the proper way and how to keep on top of your vehicle’s tire pressure needs with the service team at Morrie’s Brooklyn Park Subaru.

How to Fill Tires With Air Step by Step

To make sure that you have even car tire pressure levels, you can usually find an air hose at a public place like a gas station. To fill your tires up with air, pull over to the nearest gas station around St. Paul, park your vehicle, find an air hose, and follow these steps:

  1. Make sure that you are parked close enough to the air hose that the hose can reach all four of your tires.
  2. Remove the cap from the tire valve on your first tire.
  3. Insert your tire gauge into the open valve to check the air pressure in your tire.
  4. If the tire pressure is over the recommended amount, then insert the air hose into the open valve until the tire is at the appropriate amount of pressure.
  5. Twist the cap back on the tire valve.
  6. If the tire pressure is over the recommended amount, then use your tire gauge or something small to push down the pin in the tire valve to let some of the air out and bring the pressure down.
  7. Repeat this process for the other three tires.

How Much Air Should I Put in My Tires?

It’s important to keep your tires inflated at the proper levels, which also means making sure that you don’t overinflate them. What is the proper level of car tire pressure? The amount will vary for each kind of vehicle, but for most vehicles, the recommended tire pressure amount is between 32 to 35 psi (pounds per square inch) when the tires are cold. This is why you’ll want to check your vehicle’s tire pressure after your vehicle has cooled down for a while.

For your specific vehicle, you can either check your owner’s manual or look at the sticker that should be on the driver’s side door. Here are some things to keep in mind when filling your tires with air:

  • The psi amount is just a recommendation, but you shouldn’t have your tire pressure at this exact number. This number is the maximum amount of pressure it can hold. So, fill your tires slightly under the psi number.
  • If your vehicle’s tires are overinflated, you’ll usually be able to tell if you have a bouncy ride when driving around Golden Valley.

Now that you know how to fill tires with air and how to monitor your vehicle’s tire pressure, you hopefully are able to hit the roads with confidence and keep your tires in excellent condition.
